Lavender and lavandin

Welcome to the region which is well known for its aromatic plants. The Drôme, and especially the Baronnies, the southeastern part of the Drôme, are famous for their plants cultures, destinated to the perfume, make-up and medicins-industries. The Baronnies region produces about 80% of the French demand of essential oils.

Real lavender grows from a height of 700 meters and above approximately. At lower levels you will find plants that are called lavandin, not as strongly smelling as lavender, cheaper as well.

Lavendel bloem

The production of essential oils can be studied in Nyons, in a local distillery, from half June till end of August.

The farigoule

This distillery always starts off with the production of essential oil taken from farigoule, a provencial name for thyme, also cultivated around Mirabel.
